Q. A beam of length 6 m is supported at 2 m and 6 m from the left end of the beam and carrying 10 kN and 20 kN are acting at 2 m and 6 m from the right end of the beam. Find the support reactions.

Q. A beam of length 6 m is supported at 2 m and 6 m from the left end of the beam and carrying 10 kN and 20 kN are acting at 2 m and 6 m from the right end of the beam. Find the support reactions.

SOLUTION:

Total load= 20 + 10 = 30kN
Taking moments about B
R{A} * 4 = 20 * 6 + 10 * 2 = 120 + 20 = 140
R{A} = 140/4 = 35kN
R{B} = 30 – 35 = – 5kN
or
Taking moments about A
R{B} * 4 + 20 * 2 = 10 * 2
R{B} = (20 – 40)/4
= – 20/4 = – 5kN
