ENGINEERING DRAWING – IMPORTANCE, NEEDS AND ROLE OF DRAWING

IMPORTANCE OF ENGINEERING DRAWING

It is a common experience that when we read news papers, magazines, etc. We grasp easily, if it is illustrated with diagrams, sketches, pictures etc.

If an attempt is made to describe a machine or a building, much volume of paper is required. But the same could be done easily by drawing sketches as it appears to the eye.

Sketches illustrate more easily with better comprehension than voluminous word language.

Therefore the importance of engineering drawing came into existence based on certain basic principles, representations etc.,

NEED FOR PREPARING AS PER I.S.O. AND B.I.S. STANDARD

A person in the field of engineering should possess the knowledge of this drawing. This language should follow certain rules, principles, convensions, representations, notations, standards etc., to communicate the concept to every one in the field of drawing. Therefore for a common concept drawing and design requires some National and International standards (The Indian Standard I.S 696-1972 has revised some standards on 8th September 1972).

To serve this purposes, there is a Bureau of Indian Standards (abreveted as B.I.S) adopting the international standards in India on the code of practice for drawing (The latest being SP: 46-1988).

Similarly the other standards are

•A.N.S.I. of American National Standard Institution

•B.S. of Britian Standard Institution

•D.T.N. of Germany a hand book (By Deuresehar Normenausschuss)

•I.S.O. International Organisation for Standardization.

ROLE OF DRAWING IN ENGINEERING EDUCATION
Scope of the Subject:
The subject matter presented here related to basic engineering drawing. It mainly deals with geometrical drawing. It is the art of representation of geometrical objects on a drawing sheet and the foundation of all engineering drawings.
Plane geometrical drawing deals with the representation of objects having two dimensions. Solid geometrical drawing deals with the representation of objects having three dimensions.
