QUANTITY SURVEYING — DEFINITIONS, OBJECTS OR NEEDS AND DUTIES

Definition: Estimating of any construction work may be defined as the process of calculating the quantities and costs of the various items required in connection with the work to a reasonable degree of accuracy.)
For preparing an estimate, drawings consists of plan, sections through important points and elevation along with a detailed specifications giving description of all workmanship, properties and proportions of materials, are required. The estimate also gives an idea of the time required for its completionIf the difference is more we can come to conclusion that the quantity surveyor does not have a knowledge of volume of work and cost.
The actual cost of construction can be used as guide for preparing future estimates of similar works.

OBJECT  OR NEED FOR QUANTITY SURVEYING 
1. To obtain the administrative approval and technical sanction of estimate from the competent authority to release the funds.

2. To call for quotations or tenders based on the estimated quantities.

3: For sale or purchase of property

4. For registration of a property, to decide the stamp duties, estimation is required.

DUTIES OF QUANTITY SURVEYOR OR ESTIMATOR

The important duties of quantity surveyor is given below:

1.compression. Preparing bill of quantities

2 Preparing bills for part payments at intervals during the execution of works

3. Preparing bill of adjustment in the case of alterations or modifications in design or variations ordered during the execution of works.

4 Preparing and giving legal advice in case of court proceedings.

5. Preparation of estimates for calling tenders etc.

6. Estimate the time required for completion of the work.
